Mental Golf Lesson - Drive for Show

Drive for Show

I dont know about you, but I think every golfer believes they can be a better player if only they had good golf instruction and could keep the ball on the fairway and knock it a reasonable distance with their tee shots.

The problem with a lot of us is that we get to the first tee and think of our opening drive as something that scares the living daylights out of us.

I know I have felt it before and I am sure you know the feeling yourself.

If there are a group of people watching. You automatically think to yourself……

“What will they think of me if I shank it or duff it. Well you are so pre occupied with what other people may or may not think of your tee shot that you do not give yourself a chance to hit a good shot, you have already defeated yourself before you have started your backswing.

So I am going to help you get rid of these thoughts with a really effective piece of mental training and practice drill. Check it out below.

Forget about what John Daly, Tiger Woods, Emanuelle Canonica and all the other big hitters do and focus on what you do.

This practical easy to follow golf instruction is going to help you to test and improve your driving ability.

During a round of golf it is very unlikely that we use the driver more than 14 times. Now think about that for a moment………

14 shots out of 72 is 19.4% for a low single figure handicap player
14 shots out of 82 is 17.1% for a single figure handicap player
14 shots out of 92 is 15.2% for a mid figure handicap player
14 shots out of 102 is 13.7% for a high figure handicap player
14 shots out of 112 is 12.5% for a 36 to 40 handicap player
14 shots out of 122 is 11.4% for a complete hacker

The point here both mentally and from a thought process is that your drives are a very small portion of your complete round so are they really important.

Well if you do not get your tee shot off a reasonable distance then it makes it a little harder.

So lets look at how we can improve your driving sufficiently to get you off to a decent start on each and every hole.

This drill is very simple yet very effective.

Next time you are at the driving range you need to think about your home course and imagine each hole as you would approach it during your normal round.

The main consideration is the width of the fairway.

So when you are at the range I want you to put yourself in a position where you are playing each hole.

You must play each shot as you would a tee shot at your local course, but to make this drill a challenge you must continue hitting balls until you have hit 14 good drives in a row.

So visualise going round the course and take your time with each shot, don’t just hit ball after ball for the sake of it.

Think about each shot carefully.

If you have hit 5 good drives on the first 5 holes concentrate on the next because if you miss the next then you have to walk all the way back to the first hole and start again.

This will get you in the right frame of mind to focus on each shot as if it were a real tee shot.

Also while doing this drill make sure that if you do hit a bad shot that misses your imaginary fairway then you have to start again from the first drive again until you have hit 14 good drives on the trot.

Once you have completed a practice session with 14 good drives on the trot then raise your target and go for 15, then 16, then 17 and so on.

If you can hit 14 good drives on the trot in practice their is no reason why you will not be able to do it on the course for real.

Good luck with this one

You’ll be bombing them down the fairway very soon.
