Hi Alan, I can see where he could be going wrong here. If he knows he is good once he gets warmed up then he is probably mentally thinking about a 65 instead of maybe a 69 or 70.

Maybe try to get him to set a target of 4 pars and 1 birdie in each set of five holes or even 3 pars, 1 birdie and 1 bogey.

It sounds like he is certainly a very talented golfer but he is maybe thinking too much about a 65 instead of saying "I am going to shoot 1 under"

I think he should takes some easy pars early and only attack the Par 5s and 3s to really affect his score.

Wish him the best from me

My son plays on his high school varsity team. He is a 6 handicap and sometimes "blows" his round in the 1st 3 holes because he mentally "chokes". when this happens he almost always is under par for the rest of the match. Seems to me he needs some advice about how to handle the 1st few holes. He (of course) won't take my advice, so I'll try and get him to read this article and try it out. great post.

What a good idea. Although I usually tell people that the mental part of the game is very important and that they should adjust their attutude of mind to the game ahead at the same time as they do their physical warm ups and that they should visualise their shots before taking them I have never suggested they write down a plan for a hole. Some people may find this a chore and, therefore, not bother but for those who really want to improve their game it is another thing to certainly try. I will! Thanks.

Ok Mani,

Now it is my quest to get you a par on that hole the next time you play it.

Please do this. Let me know the distance of the hole and roughly how wide the fairway is and what hazards there are.

Once i know this I will map out exactly how you should play the hole shot by shot.

Also let me know how far you hit your driver, rescue club, 4 iron and 5 iron.

All the best

Hello Richard,

Last Monday, I hit the fairway with the mental lesson in mind. After three of my golfing buddies teed off with almost the same distances, I was forced to change plan, knowing that I can hit my ball farther. I fulled out my driver and hit it about 3 yards ahead of their balls. This time I made my second shot using the 4 iron, and a poor shot left me around a 110 yards right side of the fairway. My pitch did not get it to the green when my ball hit a branch of a tree which is slightly leaning to the fairway. To cut it short, i got a bogey 6 on my card. Now you can see a hard headed golfer out of me, right? I seldom stick to a game plan, and that's killing my score.

My home course offers a par 5 hole number 1 with a plane narrow fairway to the green. Except for a bunker at the middle right side of the fairway, everything seem very easy to make a regulation, but not for me. A par is too elusive. I will apply your mental lesson above next time I hit the fairway and that will be on next Monday. I hope a par will be inked on my score card, at last.
