Lowery gets on a High

Hi Guys,

Well if you were following my Tourney Talk this week you would have seen that i tipped up Vijay Singh and Corey Pavin to finish well after the first two rounds and I was not far off with my prediction, But………

Along came Steve Lowery to snatch victory in a playoff with Vijay after firing a great -4 in the final round. Vijay was out in front for a long time but Lowery was persistent and resistant and won his first tournament in quite a while.

His first win, 14 years ago, as all initial wins, was big. But this one, was bigger, more meaningful.

“Absolutely,” Lowery said. “After what I’ve been through, the injury (Wrist), at times I didn’t play well at all. This is absolutely the most meaningful. This course. Over Vijay.”

The ninth hole is a 486-yard yard par 4 monster that tumbles with rolling fairway and during this week had been the third most difficult hole during the tournament.

Lowery drove into a fairway bunker but it did not look like he could carry the lip of the bunker with his second, what followed next?

Lowery hit a majestic 4-iron 217 yards to 20 feet and made the putt.

Afterwards Lowery said. “The 4-irons on 8 and 9 were probably two of the best shots I ever hit.”

Lowery joined the TOUR in 1986. He’s actually getting close to the Champions Tour.

“I can’t say why I haven’t won, But I play every tournament to the end. That attitude of some people looking forward to the Champions Tour, I don’t know about that … For me, I’ve probably played in over 500 TOUR events (actually it is 519). I try to play as hard as I can and try to win.”

The trying can get frustrating, but finally, after more than seven and a half years, it was rewarding.

“I couldn’t have given it any more in 18 holes,” Lowery said of his day. I’ve been focusing all week. I just kind of told my caddie before the playoff, I’ve got nothing to lose.”

He had a tournament to lose, but it was a tournament he won. After 199 he didn’t win.

Well done to Steve Lowery and look out for this weeks Tourney Talk

All the Best

Richard
